Description

With this volume, P. J. Rhodes completes his edition of Thucydides' books on the Archidamian War, providing an Introduction (on Thucydides' history and on the Peloponnesian War), Greek text with selective critical apparatus and facing translation, and a commentary which should be useful both to specialists and to readers with little or no Greek, and which assumes no previous acquaintance with Thucydides. Matters of text and language are discussed where necessary, but the emphasis is on the war which formed Thucydides' subject-matter and on the way in which he has treated the subject.

P. J. Rhodes was Professor of Ancient History and is now Honorary Professor and Emeritus Professor at Durham University. He has edited and translated four volumes of Thucydides’ Histories in the Aris & Phillips Classical Texts series, as well as two volumes on the Athenian Constitution. His many other publications include Periclean Athens (Bloomsbury, 2018) and The Greek City States: A Source Boo’ (Cambridge University Press, 2007). He was President of the Classical Association from 2014–15 and was awarded the Chancellor’s Medal, University of Durham, in 2015.

Edition of Thucydides’ History IV.1–V.24. Greek text, with facing-page translation, introduction and commentary.
