Bulletin of Hispanic Studies (2016), 93, (7), 783–798.

Abstract

This article analyses the drama Absurdos en soledad (1963) by Puerto Rican author Myrna Casas in relation to the characteristics of the Theatre of the Absurd proposed by Martin Esslin. If this is sought to shape an image that is an allegory of dreams or nightmares, it is possible to understand Absurdos en soledad as an allegory of confusion and the search for the woman artist to enter, literally and symbolically, the (absurd) theatre. In relation to a work like Waiting for Godot, where the ‘eternal’ wait does not lead to any results, Absurdos en soledad would seem to allow a solution to the ‘continuous’ attempt of the Actress to enter the theatre – which is nothing more than a moving wait. However, the question marks in the ‘last absurd’ and the curtain falling on the first words of the Actress suggest that the escape from the absurd (of women in the theatre) is not such, and that women’s struggle to enter the theatre may not be completed.
