Modern Believing

Modern Believing (2020), 61, (1), 37–51.

This article explores the changing terrain of appeals to the politics of the common good. It considers Rowan Williams’s call to recognise the decline in such a politics and situates this claim alongside the resurgence of the idea of the common good in various forms of populism. It concludes with a brief consideration of the kinds of Christian theology that might speak to both Williams’s concerns and the return of the idea from the unsettled margins via Ivan Illich’s exploration of the Good Samaritan as a passage that calls us to better attend to temporality and particularity as a root to the universal.
