Growth and Management in the Church of England: Some Comments

Modern Believing (2014), 55, (3), 257–270.

Abstract

The church exists to glorify God and to follow Jesus Christ, not to pursue its own numerical growth. Faithfulness to the Gospel must always be put before the search for success. These truths are obscured by the Church of England's valuing of managerial skills and growth targets over prophetic vision and gentle pastoral care. The current process for selecting diocesan bishops highlights this failing and is geared up to the evisceration of truly creative theological leadership. We need more emphasis on wisdom and depth, less on growth and management.
