Representing An-‘Other’ Ganymede: The Multifaceted Character of Ismael in Tirso de Molina's La prudencia en la mujer (1634)

Bulletin of Hispanic Studies (2014), 91, (4), 347–364.

Abstract

This article studies the reference to Ganymede in Tirso de Molina's La prudencia en la mujer. I suggest that there are two related motives for the use of this mythological character in the text. First, Ganymede represents Ismael, King Fernando IV's doctor, whose sexual orientation makes him both a coward and an effeminate man. Second, the citation implies that Christians from the Iberian Peninsula believed that both Hebrews and Muslims were a community of sodomites. In order to strengthen this argument, I will refer to historical contexts (like the relationship between the Count-Duke Olivares and the Portuguese marranos), analyse Ismael's discourse where he alludes to Ganymede and, finally, provide a brief history of the Spanish perception of the religious ‘other’ before and during the playwright's time. This study proposes to unveil the importance of this forgotten Greco-Roman figure in the Spanish Golden Age theatre.
