Francisco Salzillo and the image of Penance: St Jerome

Sculpture Journal (2013), 22, (2), 7–20.

Abstract

This article examines the commission of the sculpture of Saint Jerome by Francisco Salzillo (Murcia, 1707-83) and its iconography. It analyses the intellectual and historical environment and the display of the sculpture within a church of the Hieronymite Order, the commissioner's personality and the artist's vision. The article also examines how this unique work by Salzillo reflects elements deeply rooted in popular imagery associated with the hermit-saint, and their association with ideas of penance and repentance.
