Joy Transition. Consensual Fun in La Movida's Madriz magazine

Bulletin of Hispanic Studies (2015), 92, (2), 153–170.

Abstract

This article examines the way in which fun is presented as characteristic of democratic Spain in Madriz, a magazine framed within La Movida, and published by the City Council of Madrid. During La Movida's initial stage - which coincided with the most turbulent years of the Transición - the concept of fun carried out the political function of opposition to the still current Francoist ethos. As the democratic regime consolidated, however, the idea of fun evolved from being a means to being an aim in itself, as well as the hegemonic perspective from which to see social reality. The analysis of Madriz shows that, well into the 1980s, fun was no longer used as a questioning and problematizing mechanism, but, on the contrary, as a way to nullify or blur that which was problematic, thus contributing to the consolidation of the Transición's consensus culture.
