The Blurry Outlines of Historical Urban Space: Quebec City's 400th Anniversary, its Literary Status and its Suburbs

British Journal of Canadian Studies (2009), 22, (2), 197–213.

Abstract

Among the many discourses on Quebec City's distinctive historical status during its 400th anniversary celebrations in 2008, the city's peripheral living spaces received little or no attention. The investigation of this problem necessarily involves a questioning of its narrative implications, since it is grounded in history. Through this questioning it also becomes clear that there have been no significant literary representations of Quebec City's suburbanisation. What could be the reason for this double absence of suburbia's history in the patrimonial discourses and in the literary imaginary? This article aims to address this question through a re-examination of the link between urban space and literary realism in accordance with the particular cultural history of the province of Quebec.
