The back-of-the-book indexing method for ebooks: using local chronicles as an example

The Indexer: The International Journal of Indexing (2019), 37, (4), 343–356.

This paper proposes that the back-of-the-book indexing method be employed for ebooks in the digital publishing environment, so that the index terms are directly marked on the electronic version, and an ebook with rich semantics is formed at the same time as the index is produced. The indexing method specified by the national standard, Guidelines for Establishing Indexes of Local Chronicles, is used as an example to illustrate the marking up method for Text Encoding Initiative (TEI) and the like. The advantage of this indexing approach is that the ebook function can be extended: the number of index entries is not limited by space, and the ebook’s content can be enriched through external resources, enabling the transformation from text to knowledge.
