Creating harmony: the challenges of indexing books on music

The Indexer: The International Journal of Indexing (2019), 37, (1), 3–12.

Abstract

The challenges of indexing books on music are centered on its long history, on its international character, on its being a re-creative art, and on the fact that music itself is an abstract and nonverbal form. As with most unique disciplines, some knowledge of the vocabulary of music is suggested, centered on its basic elements, and on the peculiarities of titles of musical works. Books on music are of several types; these are described along with anticipated issues the indexer may expect to encounter.
