Archivists and continuous professional development

Comma (2010), 2010, (1), 91–95.

Abstract

To nurture a culture of ongoing learning in any organisation, professional development must be a way of life and not a mandate. It is not a one-off event or the occasional session. Professional development needs to take place in a context that is based on the absolute regard for the intrinsic worth of every individual. Each individual can bring a lot to the growth and achievement of goals of the institution. In order to nurture a love and an ongoing commitment towards learning we need to discover ways that allow us to focus on relationships, on understanding and dialogue. Such a context will lead each individual to accept personal responsibility for learning and to get excited about developing ‘professional growth options.’ This article explores a number of professional growth options that can help archivists realize their personal and professional potential.
