Papua New Guinea patrol officers: a ‘boy's own adventure’ from NAA

Comma (2011), 2011, (1), 117–121.

Abstract

In 2009 the National Archives of Australia undertook a journey aimed at delivering a series of programmes to provide official recognition of the role of Australian patrol officers who served in Papua and New Guinea from the 1920s through to the 1970s. The scope was ambitious - it included magazine articles, social media, regular media and displays, and it culminated in a major event attended by former patrol officers from all over the country. Along the way, National Archives staff had the privilege of experiencing unexpected adventures with passionate and enthusiastic interest groups and historians, and the opportunity to identify and save a unique a piece of Australia's and Papua New Guinea's documentary heritage.
