Memory of the World: the Pacific perspective
Abstract
This paper explores the concept of memory from a Pacific islands perspective - in particular the challenge of preserving documentary heritage in cultures that often place a higher value on oral traditions and memories. Other more practical challenges hinder the ability of Pacific Islands nations to preserve and provide access to their documentary heritage. These include a lack of skilled staff, low funding, poor facilities for storing documentary materials, poor internet connectivity and low levels of senior management support. Strategies for addressing these challenges include raising public awareness, forming strategic partnerships, finding prominent champions and capacity-building.
