The Beijing Olympic Games: saving the Olympic Cultural Heritage through best practice archival work

Comma (2009), 2009, (2), 49–55.

Abstract

Under the leadership of the Beijing Municipal Government and the Beijing Organizing Committee for the Games of the XXIX Olympiad (BOCOG), the Beijing Municipal Archives cooperated closely with relevant departments and mobilized all archival agencies in Beijing to ensure that the collection, arrangement and access to archives would synchronize with the preparation for, and running of the Beijing Olympic Games and the Paralympic Games. Archival work in the pre-Games period (before 2008) made excellent progress, and the archives created during the time the Games took place (2008) are now being collected and arranged. This article discusses six methods for ensuring the success of archival work for the Olympic Games: raising awareness of the work and establishing specific goals; ensuring effective supervision at a high level (macro-deployment); ensuring cooperation and integration of relevant departments; the direct management of archives within BOCOG bodies; having well-established structures for collecting archives; having firm procedures in place to ensure archival work is carried out. The article concludes with a summary of the experiences of the Olympics archival work.
