The accreditation of training programmes in archive administration and records management in the UK and Ireland

Comma (2010), 2010, (1), 39–45.

Abstract

This article will describe the process of accreditation of university based educational programmes for archivists and records managers in the UK and Ireland, as carried out by the professional body, the Society of Archivists. It will consider the origins and development of the process; the selection of accreditors and the criteria used when accrediting programmes. It will also examine the growth in the number of institutions offering programmes; the variety and number of individual programmes currently on offer as well as the different methods of delivery (campus based or by distance learning), now available to students. It will conclude by considering the importance of the accreditation process to all involved parties: to the Universities, to the Society of Archivists and to the profession itself.
