Standards and standards culture: understanding the nature and criticisms of standardisation

Recordkeepers are compelled to maintain an awareness of an increasing and increasingly diverse range of standards that have a direct bearing on their role. However, rarely do they take the opportunity to reflect on the nature of standardisation itself and the genesis of particular standards, a helpful process when attempting to understand and assess the relevance and impact of any standard for local processes. This article examines the nature of standards and standardisation.
