Majority and minority perspectives in archives selection and preservation

Comma (2013), 2013, (1), 57–68.

Abstract

The author gives examples of differences between the documentation of immigrant organizations held in public and in private archives. She argues that the focus of selection policy has to change radically and that more resources must be allocated to private archives and to documentation work. As Helen Samuels has argued, the paper suggests that a research agenda needs to be established to improve the profession's ability to document society on the basis of coherent documentation plans for the various sectors of society. Only then will the groundwork be laid for an integrated societal memory that will provide relevant societal documentation.
