How do you build an e-depot? Lessons from the Rotterdam case

Comma (2013), 2013, (2), 43–58.

Digital archives are both different from and similar to their analogue equivalents. An archive service is required to provide for the preservation needs of both. This article describes the steps taken towards building an e-depot at the Stadsarchief Rotterdam (Rotterdam City Archives), a tale from which lessons can be learnt. We attempt to bring these lessons together in the form of a description of an approach methodology. We present an overview of aspects which must be considered when building an e-depot: its design and development. A single method for building - or rather, developing - such a facility does not exist, therefore a number of options are presented.
