Local government archives in the United Kingdom

Comma (2014), 2014, (1-2), 39–49.

Abstract

The development of local government archives in the United Kingdom is comparatively recent, and is quite distinct in the constituent parts of the state. The article outlines the different legal and administrative backgrounds and how this has influenced what provision is now in place. The lack of a statutory requirement to provide a service and of specific archive legislation is considered before looking at how the local authority sector has taken the initiative to improve services and develop standards. Finally the recent development of a more broadly based archive consensus at a time when local services are at risk is considered.
