"Moments in the Fall"

Neoliberal Globalism and Utopian Anarcho-Socialist Desire in Ken MacLeod's Fall Revolution Quartet and Iain M. Banks's Culture Series

Extrapolation (2014), 55, (3), 323–348.

Abstract

This paper argues that four key novels of New Space Opera—Banks's Consider Phlebas (1987) and Use of Weapons (1990) and MacLeod's The Star Fraction (1995) and The Cassini Division (1998)—allegorize left-wing struggles against neoliberal consensus. Neoliberal policies and ideologies that are, in Manfred Steger's term, "globalist" in their scope and dimension seek to drastically cut back, deregulate, and privatize the social-welfare programs defended by Banks and the Scottish National Party (SNP) under the auspices of promoting economic growth and development that will putatively benefit all. For his part, MacLeod claims a hedged affiliation with the socialist globalism of contemporary Scottish Trotskyists who, following the collapse of the Soviet Union, have propulsively fueled mainstream liberal positions such as those adopted by the SNP.
