Mind the Gap: The Impertinent Predicates (and Subjects) of King Rat and Looking for Jake and Other Stories

Abstract

This essay considers Miéville's debut novel and collected short fiction in relation to recent taxonomical debates about fantasy. Focusing particularly on his depiction of London and his explorations of the concept of metaphor, it argues that, in one sense outlined by Raymond Williams, Miéville is better understood as a realist than a fantasist. It proposes a move beyond the opposition of linguistic-ontologies which dominate theorisations of fantasy so as to better comprehend the role of fantasy in the construction of the reality of globalized capital
