Marivaux’s Le Jeu de l’amour et du hasard: what’s in a title?

Journal of Romance Studies (2008), 8, (3), 67–75.

Abstract

To translate Marivaux’s most famous title as The Game of Love and Chance is unsatisfactory on a number of grounds, as this article shows. Before suggesting five preferable alternatives to this most usually adopted translation, the opportunity is taken to present, both in French and in English translation, the lyric of the original concluding Vaudeville to the comedy, an item generally ignored by, and indeed unknown to, modern editors because not from Marivaux’s pen.
