Displacement and condensation: a Freudian analysis of A confissão de Lúcio

Journal of Romance Studies (2011), 11, (3), 65–76.

Abstract

This article examines Mário de Sá Carneiro’s A confissão de Lúcio (1914) [Lucio’s Confession (1993)]. Drawing primarily on The Interpretation of Dreams, it shows how Lúcio’s confessional outpouring can be regarded as a quasi clinical ‘document’. It then engages in a detailed analysis of two keys episodes as dream sequences, where typical devices such as displacement and condensation (as well as déjà vu, mise en abîme and a sense of the uncanny) disguise latent meanings. In the final instance, it argues that, through a daring author(iz)ing of unconscious imagination, bodily performance and artistic freedom, this modernist novella displays visionary sexual/textual formulations.
