Headings in indexes: revisiting the relationship between mains and subs

Abstract

In indexing discussions, different approaches are sometimes described as ‘rules’, although they may have no authority behind them. This article explores the ‘rule’ that you should not have only one subheading at a main heading that has locators, along with related questions to do with the relationship between main headings and subheadings.
