Archiving Samoan history for the future

The Indexer: The International Journal of Indexing (2014), 32, (1), 30–31.

Abstract

History moves in one direction. Archival items document the passage of time, but are subject to the forces of nature that cause deterioration, decay and, it is hoped, rebirth. Uili Fecteau’s basic premise is that ‘things’ will lapse into decay unless energy and effort are exerted to create or maintain an order or structure. In this paperi he focuses on a recent ‘exertion of energy’ on a collection of archival documents from the Imperial German Samoan Administration, and reflects on how the future of archives in the Pacific might look.
