Love and Friendship in Montemayor's La Diana

Bulletin of Hispanic Studies (2007), 84, (6), 745–760.

Abstract

This article argues for the important role of friendship in Jorge de Montemayor's La Diana (1559) as an alternative to the novel's hyperbolic displays of love. In contrast to the exaggerated claims made by the lovers in the text, friendship is typically expressed through a mutual commiseration between characters with very little pretense. Thus, friendship effectively provides a point of reference from which to judge the novel's lovemaking, calling into question the emotional significance of the lover's plaint. At the same time, the author suggests that the representation of friendship in the Diana may reflect the emergence of a new discourse of early modern private life, as articulated in the work of Philippe Ariès (1989). From this perspective, friendship in Montemayor's pastoral novel may be understood as a historically informed literary innovation.
