Social mobility in the Central Andes of Peru and Bolivia: Towards a more dynamic and multi-local vision of poverty alleviation

Abstract

This article aims to provide a better understanding of the way in which a dynamic and multi-local view of poverty can be integrated in development planning processes. Drawing on empirical research carried out in the department of Cusco in the Peruvian Andes and in the southern Andes of Bolivia, the article demonstrates the interdependence of rural and urban livelihoods. It discusses differences and continuities in social mobility among rural and urban dwellers in order to investigate how they use their assets to make improvements in their socio-economic positions, how they structure their careers, how they make transitions from one situation to another and how they aspire and perceive these changes. The article argues that the rural–urban continuum should be seen as an additional asset that helps people to have the best of two worlds, even though this 'bridge' is not strong enough to overcome certain vulnerabilities.
