The History and Myths surrounding Johannes Hispalensis

Bulletin of Hispanic Studies (2003), 80, (4), 443–470.

Abstract

This paper attempts to discuss and clarify the issues and misconceptions regarding Johannes Hispalensis (John of Seville), a twelfth-century translator, and to identify the area in which he began translating. His history encompasses the time of Sisnando Davídiz, Alfonso VI and the Christian campaign to regain the Iberian Peninsula from Muslim strongholds. The history of the emergent Portugal played a prominent part in identifying Limia as the area in which Hispalensis was translating when he signed himself Johannes Hispalensis atque Limiensis. His first three translations, the Secretum Secretorum to a Queen T., a tract on gout to a Pope Gregory, and the original version of Costa Ben Luca's De differentia spiritus et animae, were all medical translations. The early history of Portugal contained historical figures whose personal details tied in with reasons for the first two translations, thus helping to date their chronological order of composition. One of two important documents from 1116 produced a reference to a figure who could later have become the translator. The second document contained an abbreviated mention of Queen Tarasia, which matched exactly the form of address used by Hispalensis in the Secretum Secretorum.
