Introduction: Sartre and his ‘Others’ at Harvard

Journal of Romance studies (2006), 6, (1-2), 1–3.

Abstract

This special double issue of the JRS is based on a centennial conference held at Harvard University in April 2005, ‘Sartre and His “Others”’. We have arranged the essays in two parts, with Part One devoted largely to the question of Sartre and politics (broadly defined), and to some aspects of his personal life such as his relation to Simone de Beauvoir and ‘other women’, and Part Two focusing more specifically on philosophy and literature. The majority of contributors work in a wide range of fields and disciplines, from French literature to political science, history, sociology and philosophy. This is an indication of just how large a space Sartre occupied in the intellectual and cultural arena of the past century, and how much space he continues to occupy.
