Fair Funding for All Schools

Theory & Struggle (2018), 119, (1), 118–126.

Abstract

The national parent-led Fair Funding for All Schools campaign successfully mobilised parents across England to take local action in response to governmentimposed cuts to core school funding. Through building a network of local parent groups and working in partnership with teaching unions, the campaign gained widespread media attention and built political pressure on MPs, exerting significant impact during the general election campaign in May 2017 and resulting in a change of government position and additional funding to core school budgets. This article examines the origins and implementation of the campaign and the lessons that can be learned for other campaigns that seek to increase political leverage through the mobilisation of defined constituencies and coalition-building with other partners, including trade unions.
