In Good Times and in Bad: Comparing the Effect of Short-Term Economic Perceptions on Support for Independence in Quebec under Different Economic Conditions

Abstract

Il est bien établi que les facteurs économiques (surtout les estimations des implications à long terme de la transition vers la souveraineté) jouent un rôle important dans le processus décisionnel des Québécois envers l'option de l'indépendance. Nos recherches analysent d'une nouvelle perspective à quel point les facteurs économiques priment sur le choix d'appuyer (ou de ne pas appuyer) l'indépendance. Plus précisément, cette étude est une mise en relation de l'appui des Québécois francophones pour l'indépendance et leur perception des conditions économiques à court terme durant les élections fédérales de 1988 et de 1993. Celles-ci ont exercé une influence plus importante sur l'attitude des Québécois envers l'indépendance en 1993— à un moment où l'économie était perçue comme étant dans un état relativement précaire— qu'elles n'ont exercé en 1988, quand on considérait l'économie comme relativement forte. De plus, les perceptions négatives envers l'économie avaient rendu plus probable l'appui à l'indépendance parmi les participants aux sondages de ces deux années.
