Coping before l'État-providence: Collective Welfare Strategies of New England's Franco-Americans

Abstract

Les individus de la diaspora québécoise qui sont venus en Nouvelle-Angleterre en grand nombre à partir de la fin de la Guerre de Sécession jusqu'au début de la Crise de 1929 ont amené avec eux aux Etats-Unis leur langue (le français), leurs traditions canadiennes-françaises, leur foi catholique, et leur stratégies de bien-être social. S'inspirant de modèles et de ressources venant du Québec, ces Canadiens français ont fondé un grand nombre de leurs propres institutions charitables et religieuses ainsi que des sociétés d'entraide. Ces institutions et sociétés les ont aidés à préserver leur langue, leur foi, et leur culture, en même temps qu'elles favorisaient leur sécurité économique avant que l'Etat-Providence ne soit mis en place aux Etats-Unis.
