South of the 49th Parallel: Denis Villeneuve’s Sicario (2015)

Quebec Studies (2018), 65, (1), 149–167.

Abstract

This essay examines Denis Villeneuve’s 2015 border thriller Sicario through a comparative study of his works and other representations in the genre, as well as through border and spatial studies. It becomes clear that Villeneuve is in dialogue with his director peers while also articulating a postnational Canadian vision of a changing world to counter the dominant American narrative. At the border, where worlds edge up against each other, Villeneuve’s Sicario is a passionate apology for openness, respect, and empathy in arenas where national and multinational powers provoke tensions, fear, and violence.
