Displacement or the Deconstruction of Place in Three Recent Xavier Dolan Films

Abstract

This article examines three films by Québécois film director Xavier Dolan (Tom at the Farm, Mommy, It’s Only the End of the World) in terms of “displacement,” understood in the sense of movement from one place to another and its association with Derridian deconstruction. Using this term, which also refers to a semantic shift in meaning or difference, the article shows how Dolan’s characters in these films are displaced characters, constantly on the move, whose quests for plenitude or their place in the world are always subverted. This notion characterizes the semantic and real instability of space in Dolan’s films and appears to be at the heart of his cinematographic aesthetic, which deconstructs received ideas and binary oppositions.
