Abstract

Queer (Again) in Québec Charles R. Batson and Denis M. Provencher Union College Denis M. Provencher University of Arizona Queer (Again) in Québec October 2014: Hôtel Marriott Champlain, Montreal. Over the course of three intensely stimulating days during the 20th biennial meeting of the ACQS, over 60 participants of the Queer Québec colloquium offered new creations, explorations, and research on a queer Québec. While those conversations and discussions were occurring in Montreal, the editorial team of Québec Studies, led by Jane Moss, confirmed their gracious offer to share with the journal’s broad readership the results of this work and creativity. The first dossier appeared in volume 60, Fall–Winter 2015, along with our extensive introduction to the colloquium and its two plenary guests, Michel Marc Bouchard and Rodrigue Jean. We invite you to return to those pages, where, we suggest, our perspicacious contributors offer new ways of seeing and conceiving the queer in Québec as they “point to the possibility of a new contemporary queer Québécois family based on and transmitted in multiple differences and media now being both on the horizon and in the streets” (19). Building on the work of those first explorations, this second dossier has brought home for us the importance of these vibrant and vital explorations of differences, communities, exchanges, and transmissions. Three new voices, different in tone, range, and style, here come to join the previous four to point to what to us is an intriguing polyphony at play both in critical approaches to understanding a queer Québec and in the very expressions of that queer Québec. Together, they tell us that we, and all of us who seek to apprehend more fully the discourses that inform our cultural moment, do well to remain alive to the multiplicities that give texture and timbre not only to the whole composition but also to each component voice.
