Marie-Claire Blais chez les autres

Quebec Studies (2018), 65, (1), 5–19.

Abstract

Drawing on archival collections of diaries and letters held at the New York Public Library, Yale University, Bryn Mawr College, and Libraries and Archives Canada, as well as published memoirs and correspondence relating to Marie-Claire Blais, Roger Straus, Edmund Wilson, and Mary Meigs, this essay examines the relationship between the prominent Québec author and her New York publisher, Farrar, Straus & Giroux (FSG). Three of the four Blaisian titles published by Straus, co-founder and chairman of the firm, between 1966 and 1974 have become canonical works of Canadian literature. It is instructive to examine these four published texts more closely, with a nod to those titles she submitted but were not published, and to consider some whys and wherefores in the context of American literary publication of the time.
