Ross Chambers: Loitering Still

Australian Journal of French Studies (2020), 57, (2), 204–216.

Abstract

Ross Chambers was Professor of French at the University of Sydney for only a short period in the 1970s, but he made a lasting impact on the lives of his students and the programmes of the Department that he transformed. Aspects of that legacy are evoked in this article, through personal testimony and discussion of Chambers’s approach to pedagogy and his conception of his/the “discipline” “French”, as presented in the two Sonia Marks Memorial Lectures he delivered at Sydney University (in 1992 and 2012) and in light of subsequent developments in French Studies. This article also considers some of Ross Chambers’s other writings, particularly on Baudelaire and on AIDS, as well as questions related to decay and death.
