Bulletin of Hispanic Studies (2021), 98, (3), 301–314.

Abstract

I examine the series of reflections regarding issues associated with transformations of perception and representation in the current technological age as found in Fogwill’s La gran ventana de los sueños (2013). My starting point is a notion of communication technologies as mediators between the observant subject and ‘reality’, and where representation in the virtual world has gradually departed from experience and has, to some extent, replaced reality. I contend that, on the one hand, the text poses questions about the cognitive and narrative mechanisms involved in recovering a memory or a dream and examines how they impact on perception, as well as representation and representability. On the other hand, Fogwill presents these questions by using the screen itself as a metaphor to reflect upon the impact of simulacra processes and the effects of any medium in today’s digital age.
