The Indexer: The International Journal of Indexing

Printed indexes to early British periodicals

The Indexer: The International Journal of Indexing (1989), 16, (3), 147–155.

Abstract

During the seventeenth century, weekly and monthly journals began to appear on the British literary scene. By the early years of the eighteenth century, the first magazines were providing a more varied diet. By means of advances in typography, layout and content, their indexes gradually evolved into ever more precise and useful aids to the enquiring reader.
