The Role of Thesauri in Mechanized Systems

The Indexer: The International Journal of Indexing (1975), 9, (4), 146–154.

Abstract

There is a long history of research and development of thesaurus-type tools for various purposes including information retrieval, but vastly more money has been spent far more recently on mechanized information retrieval. This paper lightly reviews thesauri and mechanized systems and concludes with some observations about this apparent imbalance and the need for deeper thinking about concept formation and relationships, and more imaginative use of computers.
